Tule Lake PILgrimage

Frequently Asked Questions – Activities

What is the Castle Rock hike?

The Castle Rock hike is an OPTIONAL and challenging 2.5-mile hike up an 800-foot bluff to the peak, that is dusty and unshaded and has loose rocks. The view overlooks the Tule Lake Basin and the original land of the concentration camp site. A bus designated for the hike will be waiting for you in the parking lot and depart promptly at 6:30 AM on July 4, 2026. You will be provided with a light breakfast to go, since you will be leaving OIT before breakfast is served in the College Union. The hike is not recommended for anyone who is in poor physical condition or those with pre-existing medical conditions that might put them at risk under strenuous physical and harsh environmental conditions. Children under the age of 10 are not permitted on the hike. Minor children 10 and older MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian. You should not have any physical or medical conditions that could lead to dizziness, fainting, cardiac events, falls or other injury. Anyone who is not in excellent physical condition will not be permitted on the hike, as emergency medical aid is not readily available.

How do I sign up for the Castle Rock hike?

On the Activities sub-page, select the hike and answer all of the questions. You will need to sign the Castle Rock waiver in the registration system. Based on the amount of interest, priority may be given to first-time Castle Rock hikers. If you are selected, you MUST wear your name badge with your emergency contacts, medical conditions, and insurance information throughout the hike.

What are Healing Circles?

Healing Circles provide a rare opportunity for individuals to come together in supportive groups, where they can engage in deep listening and share unique insights on their Pilgrimage experiences within a non-judgmental space. This design was developed by Satsuki Ina, Ph.D., co-founder of Tsuru for Solidarity, a nonprofit organization dedicated to community care and nonviolent direct action. Trained healing circle facilitators will be provided by Tsuru for Solidarity.

Do I have to participate in a Healing Circle?

Although participation is not mandatory, we strongly encourage all pilgrims to join the Healing Circles as a way to deepen their insights and strengthen meaningful community connections during and after the Pilgrimage. At the 2024 Tule Lake Pilgrimage, over 91 percent of Healing Circle participants recommended the experience.

What occurs at Cultural Night?

On the final evening of the Pilgrimage, we will have a performance at the Ross Ragland Theater in Klamath Falls. We are looking for those pilgrims who either have a talent (e.g., musical, taiko, spoken word performer, etc.) or can help with production backstage. The registration system asks interested performers and others for details.

I have an appointment to sign the Ireichō book on July 4-5, 2026. How will I find out when my appointment is scheduled?

According to the https://ireizo.org/ website, they will create a schedule of appointments, giving priority to survivors, and then will schedule appointment requests in the order received. Your appointment will be given to you by Irei project staff in June 2026. The Tule Lake Committee has ABSOLUTELY NO role with their scheduling process, nor any information regarding when appointments will occur.
